My experience teaching at Soyo Junior High School 

Having the pleasure to work at Soyo Junior High School with each and every grade level has been a once in a lifetime experience. Teaching students that are learning my native language is inspiring because I see my reflection in them. When I was their age, I was also learning Japanese on my own. It was very difficult and not until university was I able to take Japanese courses. I think the beauty of teaching my native language is that I understand where students struggle the most when learning a foreign language as I was once in their shoes. So, I enjoy having the challenge of modeling and alternating each of my English lessons for each grade level because each class is different. It makes me happy when students get excited when I come to their class or ask me when the next time I’ll be visiting them and if I can do the same activity again. I enjoy seeing how much fun the students are having by learning English. Also, seeing them get happy when I give them a prize for their amazing work. I am amazed when students try their very best to speak English to me outside of class or help me with my Japanese abilities. Despite the language barrier, we teach and learn from each other. I am extremely proud of them and I hope they continue learning English. My JTE’s have also taught me so much about Japanese Education. I really learned a lot about the Japanese teaching style when team teaching with them. I hope to incorporate some of their ideas into my American classroom. I will cherish the wonderful memories I created at Soyo Junior High School. Until we meet again. 

双葉中学校での授業体験談

 双葉中学校働くことができたことは、一生に一度の経験です。私の母国語である英語を学んでいる生徒を教えることは、彼らの中に自分が映っているようで、とても刺激的です。私も彼らと同じ年の頃、独学で日本語を学んでいました。とても難しく、日本語の授業が受けられるようになったのは大学に入ってからでした。母国語を教えることの良さは、自分がかつてそうだったように、生徒が外国語を学ぶときにどこで一番苦労しているかを理解できることだと思います。そのため、学年ごとに異なる英語の授業をモデル化し、交互に行うというチャレンジが楽しいです。私がクラスに来ると生徒が興奮したり、次はいつ来るのか、また同じアクティビティができるのかと聞いてきたりすると、嬉しくなります。生徒たちが楽しく英語を学んでいる姿を見るのが楽しいです。また、生徒たちが素晴らしい成果を上げたときに、シールなどを渡して喜んでいる姿を見るのも楽しいです。授業以外でも、生徒が一生懸命に英語を話してくれたり、私が日本語を話すのを助けてくれたりすることに驚かされます。言葉の壁があっても、私たちは互いに教え合い、学び合っているのです。私は生徒をとても誇りに思っていますし、これからも英語の勉強を続けてほしいと願っています。また、JTEは日本の教育について多くのことを教えてくれました。先生方とチームティーチングをしたとき、日本の教育スタイルについて本当に多くを学びました。彼らのアイデアをアメリカの授業に取り入れたいと思います。双葉中学校で作った素晴らしい思い出を大切にしたいと思います。また会う日まで。
